Evaluation: Evaluation of resolution shall be
performed on copies produced from Figure I test target. Evaluation of
half-tones and blackness shall be performed on copies produced from Figure II
test target.
Resolution: Using a magnifier between 5X and 10X, determine the smallest
line pair target in each target set which can be resolved. The line pair target
is considered resolved when the lines (and spaces) are visibly separate. The resolution
of the copiers shall be the lowest resolution value obtained from the 15 target
sets on the three copies removed for evaluation.
Half-tones. Each of the three copies removed for evaluation shall be
visually examined to determine that at least three distinct shades of gray are
visible in both patterns 7 and 8 of the Test Chart. The white background shall
not be considered a shade; the darkest step shall be considered a shade.
Blackness. The copies used for the half-tone evaluation also shall be
visually examined to determine blackness of solid areas and whiteness of the
back ground. Using a standard gray scale such as a “Munsell Neutral Value
Scale”, the observer shall visually compare patterns 7 and 8 on each copy to
the gray scale, the observer shall determine the reflectance of the background
by determining the reflectance of the first step of pattern 7 and the 15th step
of pattern 8.
All six (6) dark area reflectance determinations shall comply with the
reflectance requirement for the solid darkest area on the copy.
All six (6) background reflectance determinations shall comply with the
reflectance requirement for the background tires of the copy.
Test procedure II (Copying Carbonless Blue):
1. Turn on and warm up the machine.
2. Make five (5) copies each of the color standard charts-Hue symbol 5PB,
7.5PB, and 10PB from the “Munsell Book of Color, Matte Finish Collection” with
the dark [-css/lightness control set to make the darkest copies.
3. From each group of 5 copies, choose the 5th copy and perform the evaluation.
Evaluation:
Take the 5th copy of the 5PB Hue Color Chart and, using visual evaluation, match
the lightest symbol in the 7 Value(V) line with one of the neutral grays of the
“Munsell Neutral Value Scale” and record the reflectance value.
Repeat the above using the 7.5PB and 10PB Hue symbols.
Take the average of the three reflectance values and use it to determine
compliance with the performance requirement under Carbonless Blue.
